The Hiker Hostel in Dalonega, Georgia

Alternate Text
A shot from the Appalachian Trail

I made it here to the Hostel by 4:30 yesterday afternoon. Clearing US Customs at the Toronto Airport was long, frustrating, and not fun. The US is really ramping up security on a continuum. The old fellow sitting next to me said “The extra security is necessary. They keep trying to hit at us.” Seems that if there were no boogie man, it would be necessary to invent one. The enemy has achieved their goal. They have significantly increased the tedium of international travel.

Today I have the daunting and traumatic prospect of acquiring a new cellphone plan. It is necessary if I’m going to be able to use the hundred dollar Guthook Appalachian Trail App I purchased a month ago. I also have paper maps and “The A.T. Guide” 2015 Northbound edition.

Six youngsters in their 20’s and two retired lady veterans from Blacksburg,VA left from our Hostel today. All were calling themselves “Through Hikers” at this point. Time will quickly separate the wheat from the chaff. Separate the ill prepared from the stolidly determined.

Now the shuttle is to take me to the Walmart where my fight with the demons of cyberspace will begin.
